In Brief

Why Our Sleep Causes Wrinkles

The position in which you sleep can cause lines and wrinkles on your face over time. This is because the pressure and weight of your head on your pillow can cause creases and lines to form on your skin.

Sleeping on your side or stomach, with your face pressed against the pillow, can cause lines and wrinkles on your cheeks, forehead, and chin. These lines are commonly referred to as “sleep lines.” Over time, repeated pressure on the same areas can cause these lines to become permanent.

To help prevent sleep lines and wrinkles, try sleeping on your back. This can help distribute the weight of your head evenly and reduce the pressure on any one area of your face. You can also consider using a silk pillowcase, which can be gentler on your skin and cause less friction than a cotton pillowcase. In addition to this, silk can also help prevent dehydration of the skin as it is a much less absorbent material. Lack of hydration can cause the skin to become dry and lose its elasticity, leading to wrinkles and fine lines.

It’s important to note that sleep position is just one factor that can contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Other factors, such as sun exposure, smoking, and genetics, can also play a role.
